About Us

So Popera Productions are a fresh, new Wollongong based not-for-profit company with a mission to bridge the gap between community theatre and professional theatre in the Illawarra Region.

Established in 2008, The company was founded and continued to be managed by University of Wollongong graduates, all of whom have professional training in the Entertainment Industry. So Popera has staged four very successful Musical productions as well as a variety of cabaret and curated showcases - all while developing the proud tradition of providing quality, worthwhile opportunities for emerging artists in the Illawarra Region.

So Popera have the pleasure of providing a training ground for developing artists and technicians.  By working alongside our industry professionals, new recruits will gain skills through work experience programs, as well as industry training and development for production students - including University & TAFE students and VET Entertainment placements - many of whom have gone on to pursue full time careers in the industry.

The most recent and most successful production staged by So Popera was the Illawarra’s premiere performance of the hit Broadway musical, The Producers, playing to sold out houses at the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre in Janurary 2016.
So Popera has been  awarded Best Production of a Musical and Best Director (2014) and Best Set Design and (again) Best Director of a Musical (2016) Canberra Area Theatre Awards, which encompasses regional NSW.
